Last evening, as the weekend drew to a close, I was lazing away to glory with my 6 month-old nephew Raihan. Balancing him on my lap, I was trying to read the day's newspaper. The ruffling of the paper drew Raihan's attention and the next moment he had whacked the paper from my hand! He attacked the paper with a vengance and had in shreds in a few minutes. He was so fascinated that he spent a good hour disecting the paper and trying his best at a tasting session!
This episode really got me thinking on a couple of fronts. Firstly, I have never really seen him so fascinated earlier. No matter how expensive or big his toys were, he would loose interest in a few minutes, this simple newspaper that cost a couple of dirhams seemed to be his favourite toy. Which got me to thinking, do we really need the biggest and the best? In this day and time when consumption culture has reached its peak, do we really need the shiny mobile phone, the fastest car and the big ass home - theatre?? Have we really lost the ability to appreciate the little things in life?
I also got thinking about the the little guy in my lap, with such an innocent smile and a pure heart. All he needed was a newspaper to bring a wide smile to his face. What would the world do to him in the next 20 years? Where along the way would he loose his innocence and his zest for life and become part of the rat race that we all are running?
Are we so sucked into the race for the best and highest that we have forgotten how to live? I think its time we got a little less serious...its time we bring back some zindagi to our lives......
